Eligibility Questions
Who is eligible to apply for the Weatherly Scholarship?
To be eligible, you must:
- maintain a permanent address in Cooke County, Texas (or bordering county at the Team's discretion),
- be 16-24 years of age,
- demonstrate significant financial need, and
- provide three letters of recommendation.
See our complete eligibility requirements.
I live in a county that borders Cooke County. Can I apply?
Yes, residents with a permanent address in bordering counties may be considered at the discretion of the Weatherly Scholarship Team. We encourage you to apply and explain your situation in your application.
What does "significant financial need" mean?
Financial need refers to the gap between the cost of attending college and what you and your family can reasonably afford to pay. Documentation such as your FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) or other financial documents can demonstrate this need.
I'm homeschooled. Can I apply?
Yes! Homeschooled students are welcome to apply. You can provide homeschool transcripts or other documentation of your academic work. Homeschooled students are also eligible for dual credit scholarships at NCTC.
Application Process
When is the application deadline?
For the 2026 application cycle, applications are due by March 13, 2026. All materials must be received by this date. Applications open January 1, 2026.
Can I submit my application by mail instead of email?
No, applications are only accepted online.
Do I need to be accepted to a college before I apply?
You do not need to have a college acceptance letter to apply, but you should indicate which college(s) you plan to attend in your application. Scholarship awards are contingent upon enrollment in an accredited institution of higher education.
What is the cost of attendance?
The cost of attendance is the amount that your school estimates it will cost per semester or academic year to attend the school. You only need to provide us the cost of tuition and any manditory fees. We do verify these amounts with each school and the amounts are published on your colleges website. The team reserves the right to adjust your cost of attendance if we find (after meeting with your school) that your numbers are vastly different from the school estimate. The simplest way we have found to estimate your tuition is to take the cost per credit hour and multiply by the number of hours you plan to take. For further questions about the cost of attendance please consult with your schools financial aid or student accounting office.
Letters of Recommendation
Who should write my letters of recommendation?
You need three letters from specific sources: (1) a teacher or professor, (2) a church member or pastor, and (3) someone who can speak to your character, academic achievement, and community involvement (such as a community leader, employer, coach, or counselor). See our detailed guidance on letters of recommendation.
Can a family member write one of my letters?
No, letters of recommendation should not come from family members. The letters should be from people who can provide objective assessments of your abilities, character, and potential.
Should my letter writers send their letters directly, or should I include them with my application?
Each of your recommenders will receive an email to the online reference form.
Award Amounts & Scoring
How much money can I receive?
Regular scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 based on your application score. Dual credit scholarships are $250 per semester. See our complete award amounts table.
How is my application scored?
Your application is evaluated based on multiple factors including academic achievement, letters of recommendation, demonstrated financial need, personal statement, and evidence of character and community involvement. The Weatherly Scholarship Team reviews all materials to determine your score.
When will I find out if I received a scholarship?
Scholarship recipients will be notified of their award decision in April.
How is the scholarship money distributed?
Funds are paid directly to your educational institution. NO funds are paid to students. If you receive a scholarship you will have from May 1 until June 30 to provide us with final details for your award. Checks are mailed to each college in mid to late July. Once the checks are mailed we have no control over the process. It is your responsibility to let your school know you have been awarded a scholarship and to follow-up with them about when the funds will be credited to your account. All scholarships (other than dual credit) are paid half in the fall and half in the spring.
Dual Credit Scholarships
What is a dual credit scholarship?
Dual credit scholarships support high school students who are taking college courses at North Central Texas College (NCTC). These scholarships are $250 per semester and are only available for courses taken at NCTC.
Can I receive both a regular scholarship and a dual credit scholarship?
The dual credit scholarship is specifically for high school students taking dual credit courses. Once you graduate high school and enroll in college full-time, you would apply for the regular scholarship (up to $5,000 annually).
My school doesn't have an agreement with NCTC. Can I still get a dual credit scholarship?
Dual credit scholarships are only for attendance at NCTC when the applicant is enrolled at a school with an agreement with NCTC or is homeschooled. If your school doesn't have an agreement with NCTC, you may not be eligible for the dual credit scholarship.
Renewal & Previous Recipients
Can I renew my scholarship for multiple years?
Yes! Previous recipients may renew their scholarship for up to three additional years, for a total of four years of support. See our renewal requirements.
What GPA do I need to maintain to renew my scholarship?
Renewal applicants must maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours).
Do I need to submit a new application to renew my scholarship?
Yes, renewal applicants must submit a renewal application, which will be assessed using the same criteria as initial applications. You'll also need to provide current transcripts, proof of enrollment, and documentation of good academic standing.
What happens if my GPA drops below 2.5?
Renewal applicants must maintain a 2.5 GPA to remain eligible. If your GPA falls below this threshold, you may not be eligible for renewal. We encourage students to seek academic support services early if they're struggling.
